I have a vegetable garden in Midwestern Northern Illinois. It is organic, has raised beds, and I am using double digging techniques (actually bastard trenching), along with French Intensive concepts. I broke ground in December of 2009, and I hope that if you are a beginning or struggling gardener that this blog will be an encouragement to you.
Hi, I found your blog searching for information on French grey shallots. I've got them growing in my garden in Maine as well, and am wondering about when to dig them.
ReplyDeleteYours look great. Mine are looking similar, although some of the leaves are beginning to fall over. Good luck!
The French Shallots pictured above can/should be pulled when they fall over. They will look like an animal got in with them and rolled on top of them. A day or so after they are pulled you can weave them together. Don't damage the tops, because the bulbs are still growing and will pull nutrients out of the tops. They will get larger after they are harvested.
