Fall Calcot planting

I've been busy planting y Calcots, which will make nice spring green/scallion onions. Yesterday I planted 50 lbs/25 kilos and I plan on doing 50 more today. They are my  manure winter cover crop. You have to use the Spanish White bulbs, otherwise they don't taste so sweet, nor grow tall and slender. Last year I tried the Yellow Spanish and the worked ok, but sort of wanted to bulb up. Go with the White Spanish.

These are my Calcots onions that I have been harvesting. I will have them all pulled by May 1st. They will get hot too eat as the weather warms, and I am going to plant my peppers in their space. I tried to save money last fall by planting yellow onion bulbs instead of white onion bulbs. I don't think it affects taste too much, but it seems to affect the shape. They seem to end up shorter and more bulb like at the tips. The edible portion as you can see is about 12 inches. They are like green onion/ Scallions on hormones. People around here haven't seen any thing like them and were asking what do you do with them. They are very sweet, do with them as you will. It seems that each bulb planted produces about 5 Calcots harvested.

I planted these Calcots about September 5th. I think I planted about 75 bulbs, and about half are coming up already. So its been about 6 weeks. Even if they don't all sprout this year it doesn't matter, they will start very early next spring. The only thing I have to do is mound them up as they grow to blanch them. Each bulb will produce about six scallions.

I planted about 75 onions, about setember 5th. They are buried about four inches deep. Each bulb will produce about 5 or 6 green onions next spring. They will be ready to harvest in April. I planted each bulb about 6 inches apart. If you look online there is quite a bit of information how to cook and make special sauces for them. In Spain they have big Calcot Onion festivals.

I planted my calcots about September 5th. I bought a few bags of onions at the grocery store. I think its a good idea to use as nice and big ones as you can find. You cut the tops off and bury them in a trench about four inches deep. They will sprout in about 5 weeks, as they grow you keep backfilling dirt around them. In march they will start to grow and you will have the nicest green onions you have ever seen.

Last August 20th I purchased and planted some white onions. I cut the tops off and planted them in trenches, covered with about 4 inches of soil. They didn't sprout until October. It took so long that I thought they had rotted away. I don't know if the had been treated with a growth inhibitor or needed to break dormancy. maybe it would help to refrigerate them before planting. There was some growth last fall and then this spring just as soon as the snow melted they really took off. You want to mound them up as they grow. They are really large and sweet.
